Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – Aldersgate College Inc. has unveiled an innovative teaching strategy called the Labi Framework, aimed at enhancing the appreciation and understanding of literature among high school students. The framework, developed by Daryl John Tamani, a Filipino major, draws inspiration from the Filipino word labi, which means “lips,” symbolizing expression and communication.
The Labi Framework highlights the transformative power of literature as a means of expressing human experiences and emotions. It focuses on four key principles:
Language Mastery – Enriching students’ command of language to better express their ideas and interpretations.
Active Engagement – Encouraging interactive and participatory learning through debates, dramatizations, and group activities.
Bridging Perspectives – Connecting literary themes to real-life issues and fostering meaningful discussions.
Immersion in Culture – Promoting Filipino literary works alongside global texts to nurture cultural pride and awareness.
Daryl John Tamani explained that the Labi Framework serves as a tool to help students find their “voice” in literature. “Just as lips are vital to communication, literature gives us a platform to articulate our thoughts, emotions, and identities. Through this framework, we hope to inspire students to view literature as both personal and universal,” he shared.
Initial feedback from students and educators has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers noted that the framework fosters critical thinking and deeper engagement with literary texts, while students appreciated its relatable and interactive approach.
Aldersgate College plans to incorporate the Labi Framework into its curriculum for the next school year, solidifying its commitment to innovative and culturally relevant education.
